about

This is the result of a year-long international collaboration.

Tricia Thom: vocal (Edinburgh)
Santosh Chandran: guitar, geena, santoor (Kerala, India)
Ravish Shet: tabla (Kerala, India)
Bobo Lavorgna: bass (Connecticut, USA)
Norman Lamont: acoustic guitar, Nashville guitar, arrangement

Written by Norman Lamont

I wrote the song around 1981 although I have a vague memory of singing something like it in 1979. I've played versions of it with various bands since then. I met Ravish in Kerala in 2019 and immediately knew I wanted him to play on this song. He brought in Santosh, playing the geena, a hybrid veena/guitar which he designed. I wanted a string bass for it and was glad to include Bobo, a longtime online friend and collaborator, and Tricia, who sang this with me in the band Hungry Ghosts was always the first choice for singer.

lyrics

Seven days or maybe nine
Groundless rumours heavy wine

Foreign words in a foreign clime
This time yesterday, local time

Music in fragments
Like rags on a tree
Barely remembered
Only the sea

Sun is high and sun is white
Hanging fire and fading sight

Waking up as evening falls
Rolling floor and shifting walls

Roll with the punches
Embrace the disease
Clinging to nothing
Only the sea

Reaching out for solid ground
Ever hopeful, always drowned

Reading your diaries
Looking for me
Maybe remembered
Only the sea
