about

I had a rather insipid 'rock' version of this that I'd done at home. I had the guitar riff, the melody and some words. I asked Graeme if he'd like to work on it and took it up to his attic studio. I made up the remainder of the words on the spot, feeling like there was a story there if I could just see it.

In one day, he went through it like a force of nature, adding power wherever he touched it. Watching him adding lead guitar tracks as if he was onstage was mental. Then, after I'd gone home, he went on building it up, choirs and towering stacks of keyboards. The nearest I'll ever have to the E Street Band.

To be honest Graeme would have sung it better too - maybe that's the next step?

lyrics

My sister says the rainclouds are lifting
And finally she sees where she's been stuck
She says to tell you better days are coming
She says to tell you all the best of luck

I want to meet you in a town called Broken Head
Some things will not wait until the spring
I want to find you in a town called Broken Head
In spite of everything

I'm struggling just like you with the discipline
I'm letting go my likes and my dislikes
I love you dearly each and every one of you
That's why I want to have your heads on spikes

We'll gather in the spring for the inquest
We'll sit beneath the dappled trees and talk
But till then there's just the rain and the pain and the blame
And the shame that drives our days into the rocks

I want to meet you in a town called Broken Head
Some things will not wait until the spring
I want to find you in a town called Broken Head
In spite of everything
