Miller's Lake

by Norman Lamont

/

about

A tale of transition or transformation.

lyrics

She took a train to Millers Lake
To fight her demons there
A single bag, a change of shoes
She cropped away her hair

The first night was a trial of strength
She never fell asleep
The numbers flickered in the dark
All she could do was weep

The second day in Miller's Lake
She walked along the beach
The stones that crunched beneath her foot
Surprised her with their speech

The second night the wind came up
She sat beside the door
It rattled like boiling pot
And grumbled on the floor

Every face in Millers Lake
Had nothing new to tell
She didn't need to talk to them
She knew that look so well

The third night when she tried to sleep
She opened up a door
To every crying hungry ghost
To every face she wore

She walked the room in Miller’s Lake
Her body racked with pain
"I don't believe you” cried out loud
And all was still again

When daylight came to Miller’s Lake
She walked out in the rain
With every drop that struck her face
She lost another stain

The promenade was empty then
She stood and watched the swans
She looked for marks of who she was
And knew that they were gone

The locals watched her from their windows
Standing in the storm
It might have been the teeming rain
That seemed to blur her form

By the early afternoon
She was barely there
The rain had stopped and in their eyes
She blended with the air

And now I walk by Miller’s Lake
And watch the swans sail by
The mountains lean into the clouds
And scratch them as they fly

I always go to where she stood
Like it were mine to choose
All the way to Miller’s Lake
With everything to lose
All the way to Miller’s Lake
With everything to lose
